“I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain” is one of the finest songs on Goodbye & Hello. It contains one of Buckley’s most immediately attractive arrangements, with an energetically played acoustic guitar running through the song. The song’s lyrics are certainly preachy (“You didn’t understand my love/You didn’t even try”), but they’re not unattractive, even though they are a tad pretentious to modern ears. Musically, the song is more successful, with a great, turbulent arrangement, reminiscent of Daniel Lanois, and an engaging, friendly melody especially compared to most of Buckley’s work. One of the outstanding songs on Goodbye & Hello.
